The way I measure someone’s “success” training with me is their growth in body awareness and understanding of movement. It’s not based on an arbitrary number on a scale or how many times a week they train. It’s aways about the quality of work we do together.

POETRY & MOTION - a choreopoem

A choreopoem is a dramatic performance that combines poetry, dance, music, and song. The term was coined by Ntozake Shange in 1975 for her work For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf.

I recently read From Okra to Greens: A different love story and I was reminded of the power of movement and storytelling. It made me reflect on the last time I collaborated with a poet to create a choreopoem. You can view full performance here :) @tcarteruplifts

Kendrick’s performance tapped into my memory of creating this piece of choreography

Football in general reminds me of a piece a created back in 2019 for @sandiegodancetheater Young Choreographers Showcase.

I create EKIN in response to the NLF’s response to Colin Kaepernick’s choice to kneel during the national athem. He was doing it as a form of protest against police brutality and state sanctioned violence against Black and Brown bodies in America. I was moved by his courageous act to risk his career and inspired to create a piece that probably wouldn’t “win” this choreography contest BUT would give me a platform to make a statement with my art. I was JUST coming into my artistic voice and I’m proud of myself for taking a risk. This piece marked the beginning of me becoming a social conscious artist.

One day I’d like to restage this work with a predominantly Black & Brown cast BUT until then I’ll share some excerpts here.

Pilates training with Ajay was some of the most gentle but effective movement I have practiced, especially as a plus size person. I often feel excluded in “exercise” environments but Ajay met me where I was at while challenging me physically. It helped with balance, flexibility and strength. I recommend pilates for all body types as well as anyone with mobility issues!

CONSISTENCY is KEY 🔑

Pilates is a practice that takes TIME to build upon and without dedicating yourself to a consistent practice it will be hard to truly feel the impact of this practice. Consistency does mean it has to be intense BUT it has to be intentional.

As a movement educator I want folks in my class to learn HOW to move well and feel CONNECTED to their bodies.

The workouts I facilitate cannot be measured by calories burned. You’ll feel the effects of my classes when you move differently in your daily life. You feel better moving and you know corrective exercises that keep you in alignment

I encourage you to find a movement practice that supports your lifestyle. For me that’s pilates!

Here you see us going through a variation of pigeon pose on the pilates chair. With the use of this apparatus we are able to incorporate mobility of the spine while stretching the lower back, glute, hamstring and calf.

Excited to officially announce that I have moved to a new location! Although it was nice to have a lil speakeasy type studio near the beach, this new location has a few perks that I think most folks will appreciate!

1. Plenty of street parking
(no more problem finding parking when Carlsbad Village has an event or summer season)

2. Waiting room - if you arrive early to your session you can come in to wait in the lounge and change in spacious bathroom (there’s even a button you can push to alert me that you’ve arrived!)

3. We have central A/C and heat (no more layering in the winter and running 2 fans in the summer)

This move was not planned. To be honest, the stress made me want to pause my business indefinitely. (Especially with balancing being a full-time grad student)

But here I am, embracing this unexpected NEW CHAPTER.

Once upon a layout…

Grad school is reminding me of the joy I get from a creative performance practice. In recent years I’ve spent most of my time on the designer side of shows. Working my performance muscles is opening up something inside me that I have fed in a long time. It feels…scary and freeing. Thisphoto embodies that. It is also from a dance film performance I did back in 2020.

My name is Alyssa "Ajay" Junious, and I am a San Diego-based artist, choreographer, pilates practitioner, and educator. I have over 10 years experience working in the dance, theater and commercial industry and as the founder of Continuum Arts & Pilates I combine my passions for arts and wellness to serve my community. As a pilates practitioner, I specialize in training competitive dancers, athletes, performing artists, and active aging adults. As a choreographer, I specialize in musicals, movement direction for actors, and entertainment for special events.
